As I thought about my next blog I considered how one might use this journal. In my Sunday School class we have been looking at the Wesleyan Class Meetings. It then occurred to me that the Three Questions Journal fit Wesley almost perfectly. A few very minor changes to the questions as to the relative time of day. Wesley’s rules “Do no harm” Question: “What did I do wrong today, this week, since we last met.” The same works for each question.
This is your journal so you can reframe the questions any way you want. The only thing I would like to stay the same is the Scripture verses and the reflection. Don’t go looking for a commentary to see what someone else had to say. Look inside to see what God is saying to you. This will be difficult at first, but as you work at it it will become easier. This will become a very important self study, and it will help you focus.
Try using this with a small (8 -10 people) group. Everyone in the group will use the same 7 pages in the book. Begin with prayer then ask the group “How is it with your soul?” then share together what the Scripture says to each person then move to the three questions. I suspect that at first it will be superficial. As you learn to trust each other the answers will become deeper.
Trust and confidentiality are a must. If one person breaks these the group will be wounded but not irreparably. You will find that the group will regress to the superficial and then grow again.
Good luck.
